Loofahs also known as luffas are mostly used to clean the body and other surfaces. They come in a variety from “all-natural” loofahs made from a gourd grown in tropical and subtropical climates in the cucumber family to artificial types. You can either grow these plants domestically or import them from nearly any warmer climate.

The plant blooms and flower blossoms, developing into a long, gourdlike plant similar to that of a giant cucumber or zucchini. They can later be harvested, peeled, seeds removed, dried and used for cleaning.

Loofahs are mostly used to exfoliate and cleanse the skin and face mostly during shower time. While using them to clean your body you need to properly clean and care for them, especially after use to prevent the accumulation of bacteria. Check out this loofah article for more information about the loofah types available but here are some benefits to cleaning your body with a loofah.

Lathering and cleansing

When used with soap, loofahs lather up and can be used for skin cleansing, especially when bathing. When mixed with water and soap, the sponge creates a good lather that can be used to remove dead skin cells refreshing your skin. But, being natural and slightly abrasive, you need to limit how frequently you use them to ensure the texture is not too abrasive for your skin. For this reason, avoid using loofah sponges on the face and other sensitive areas of the body too frequently.

Skin exfoliation

Loofahs can be used as skin exfoliators on your body and face. Their texture helps to remove dead skin cells that sometimes clump on the top layer of the skin. Exfoliation is good at brightening a dull face making you look more youthful. All you need to do is to do a gentle scrub without affecting the young and healthy skin cells under your skin. But, be careful with exfoliation, especially if you have sensitive skin since too much skin exfoliation can result in skin irritation or redness damaging the skin overtime.

One limiting factor about using a loofah is that when hung to dry in the bathroom, due to the moisture present, it can collect moisture or steam residue making it conducive for dangerous bacteria to grow and multiply.

Promotes blood circulation

The contact between your skin and the loofah as you take a shower or bathe can stimulate blood circulation.

Give a better clean

A simple shower where you take the body wash or soap and slather it all over your body using your hands is never enough to clean the skin. With a loofah, the soap lathers up and when applying it on your skin the texture scrubs your body and there’s more coverage and a better clean. Since it lathers up so well, you also end up using less soap which can save you some extra cash.

As pointed out above, while they are quite beneficial, it’s important not to overuse loofahs since they can damage your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin. Simply ensure that you’re thoroughly cleaning, drying and taking care of your loofahs and other bath accessories. There are other loofah uses for example; they can be used as household cleaning products like to scrub tiles, showers and sinks.
