8 Easy & Creative Family Photo Ideas

Everybody loves to have family photos to display around the home and to save memories of their children as they grow. However, if you take a lot of photographs, you can end up feeling as though you’re running out of ideas, and are taking the same posed shots over and over again. Candids can help with this, but it’s hard to take good candid shots of the whole family. If you’re looking for some more creative ideas for posed family shots, try some of these ideas.

Before you start experimenting with poses, spend some time playing with the photography settings on your camera or your phone. You can create some interesting pictures by using different filters, like double exposure photography. If you need posing ideas, try these.

In Focus Family Shot

For this, position one family member nearest the lens, and everybody else a little way behind them. Only the person at the front should be in focus, with the family behind them in soft focus. This is a great shot to showcase one person at a time, such as to celebrate the arrival of a new baby. You could also use this effect for celebrating an achievement for one family member, such as a graduation.

Outdoor Photo Shoot With Wildflowers

Find a nearby field filled with beautiful wildflowers and use it as a backdrop for some beautiful photographs. Have the family spread out among the flowers, and encourage them to interact with each other and the flowers around you. This could help you create some interesting, dynamic-looking pictures, as the family moves around and laughs together.

A Message

Pose the family in the background of the photograph, slightly out of focus. In focus, at the front, similar to the in-focus family idea, put a sign or a message board. This could be a chalkboard, a lightbox, or anything else you can write a message on. This can be a fun option for sharing big news or celebrating a special occasion, like a wedding, an anniversary, or a pregnancy announcement. This idea is easy to personalize for any message you want to share and is a lovely way to preserve some special memories.

Our Hands

Layer the hands of every member of the family, with the largest hands at the bottom and the smallest at the top. When you look back on this photo in years to come, you’ll be amazed at how small your children’s hands used to be. This shot is a lovely way to preserve some special memories of how small your children once were, in a creative, interesting way. This idea could look especially nice in black and white.

Show Some Love

A lot of people don’t care for the traditional posed photographs as they feel false, with everyone standing and facing the same way, smiling into the camera. For your next family photos, ignore the camera, and interact with each other instead. Show some love. Kiss your spouse. Tickle the baby. Hug your kids. Move and interact, and snap away for some gorgeous pictures that will have a lot more life and personality than the obvious posing.

Sports Team Pride

Are you all big fans of a particular sport and like to follow your local team? If you love to watch the local baseball, football, or rugby team, you could use this to create a really fun picture. Get everybody some merchandise to wear, such as matching t-shirts or baseball caps, and take some pictures together. You can show off something you love to do together, and create some interesting pictures.

Matching Outfits

If you want some smart-looking pictures, choose a color scheme and dress everyone in the family in those colors. The finished pictures will look coherent and pretty, with everybody matching. You could combine the matching outfit ideas with any of the other pose ideas in this post, to create some really unique final images.

At Work

If you are allowed to, take the family to work and use your workplace as a backdrop for pictures. This could be especially cute if your workplace has a very distinctive look or has some great backgrounds and props to play with, such as a blackboard in the classroom if you’re a teacher, or standing with the fire engine if you’re a firefighter. A photoshoot like this could be a great way to save some special memories of spending time together, and show your children what you do all day at the same time.
