We all strive to keep a tidy and presentable home, but with the pressures of work and family life, it is not uncommon for many to struggle. We can often quickly make the home more presentable if we are expecting company with a quick tidy-up, but one thing that will give the game away is if we are subject to the prevalence of unpleasant odors. We must take a continuous and persistent attitude to eliminate odors and ensuring a permanently fresh and fragrant-smelling home.

Open Windows & Doors

It is essential to allow fresh air to circulate around the home regularly. The simple act of opening doors and windows whenever possible will keep a new feel and prevent unwanted smells from building up. Of course, this is not always possible in colder months, or for those who live in congested and polluted city center areas so that a good air-conditioning system may be an adequate substitute.

Eliminate Clutter

If you keep a messy home, then smells will find hiding places. Even if we have good air flow if there are piles of clothes or other belongings, the air cannot get around these. This is especially true for young children, as they are experts at dropping/hiding discarded food, dirty clothes, and many more unmentionable delights. A simple tidying routine once per day should be sufficient to help with this; be sure to vacuum and dust as part of this schedule.

Sort Pest Issues

The cleaner and tidier we manage to keep our home, the less likely we are to encounter issues such as insects, pests, and bugs, but sometimes it is outside our control. This is especially true if we live in an apartment building where neighbors can bring unwanted problems which work their way through the walls. Bugs in fabrics are the worst for creating odor and smell; an efficient bed bug treatment can be all we need to tackle this issue effectively.

Fragrances

To keep our houses smelling nice and welcoming, there are plenty of air fresheners on the market to delicately employ a subtly perfumed scent to the air. Something like a beautiful dragon fruit scent can really add an edge to the ambiance in the house. We should be careful not to use air fresheners to mask bad smells, instead to create pleasant ones; if there are any issues adding scents will make things worse and prevents us from dealing with the cause of the problem.

Carpets & Upholstery

Carpets and upholstery are well-used fabrics that can accommodate horrifying levels of dirt, bacteria, and bugs. Anyone who has ever hired a carpet cleaner will testify to this. For this reason, it is essential that we have them cleaned on a regular basis. A good guide is to have home fabrics cleaned once a year as an absolute minimum and more if we have pets or children present in the home. Eventually, we will have to replace carpets and have the furniture re-upholstered.
