Summer ’21 is almost upon us and we once again stand in the face of uncertainty. What will the world look like next week or next month? No-one seems to know, but we do hope the pandemic will be idling to a halt.
Even though there are many people with vaccines and the most vulnerable members of society appear to be protected, it might still be inadvisable to restart everything like before. Instead we need to take it slowly.
With this in mind we’ve compiled a list of staycation ideas for summer ’21 that don’t cost much money but certainly deliver enjoyable experiences that are likely to keep you entertained and healthy all through the sunshine months.
A BIKE RIDE

The summer might still be locked down in many places and people might still be feeling a little bit cautious. That’s why it’s a good idea to stay local and enjoy the countryside. If you’re lucky you might also be able to travel a little further.
You don’t have to go far to encounter some lucky greenery and trees that breathe out delicious oxygen. Ride your bike along well worn paths and nod to the friendly passers by. If you have mobility issues there are options.
A twin mobility scooter is great for couples or singles with pets, they are also an excellent replacement for a bike ride in the country. Ride the mobility scooter on the bike lane instead of the dirt track for better traction.
A MOVIE DAY

Although it isn’t recommended that you jet off to your favourite holiday destination just yet, that doesn’t mean you should enjoy your summer 21 holiday in other ways. The pandemic actually challenges us to find creative solutions.
One of these creative solutions is a movie day. If you and your friends love movies why not get together once or twice a month and have a big day at the movies. With most movie theatres still unlikely options, this is a great alternative.
You can set up your movie day in your home or in your garden when the sun goes down. Decide on a movie between friends or surprise them with your choice. Don’t forget the popcorn and the snacks.
GO SEE A SHOW

It’s fair to dmsay the worst if the pandemic is over. Even if we don’t fully have control of the virus just yet, enough people have been vaccinated to help reduce the numbers when things open up. People will also still wear masks and remain vigilant.
This summer we can expect to see some more of our favorite entertainment spaces reopening. These include arts spaces and music venues. You may still have to exercise some caution, but it should still be possible to go and see a band or artist.
In light of no major summer vacation overseas why not invest more in your local community and see shows that need your investment. You can make up a summer itinerary that costs about the same as a vacation.
SHOP ’TIL YOU DROP

It’s isn’t just the society, the economy, and people, who have taken a sudden and forceful impact from the pandemic. The high Street has too. Consider the impact on the retail sector that still had rents and bills to pay even though they were forced to close. Some will not reopen.
For those that do reopen it’s important we support them by spending our money in the local area instead of overseas or online. The local shops need this cash boost to help them recover from a sudden drop in revenues.
The good news is this investment can also mean a fun day out for you and your friends. Why not arrange to hit the shops early and make a day of it. One that includes lunch and plenty of coffee.
TAKE NAPS

This might seem like a funny activity to put on a list of summer activity ideas but it really is beneficial and worthwhile when you have the time. A nap can refresh you in the afternoon. It can make you feel more energised and look younger as well.
The Best time to take a nap is in the afternoon when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. You don’t need to put your bed clothes on and go under the covers – that might be too warm.
Instead, find a shady place where you can relax without any interruptions. A hammock is a good idea. A hammock allows you to relax casually in the afternoon and sleep off an active morning or heavy lunch.
GET INTO A WATER SPORT

There is no better time than summer to get into water sports. The water is clean and glistening in the sun. It’s hot outside so the cool water is welcome. The water is also warmer than usual in the summer.
There are so many exciting water sports to choose from. If you want something that’s exciting and adventurous, why not hire a speed boat or jet ski. You could get into water skiing or water boarding.
If you want something a little more gentle then think about kayaking or wild swimming. These activities will take you to some of the most spectacular locations your country has to offer.
PLAY TENNIS

Summer means many things. It means sunshine, water, sand, BBQs, and this year it means staycations. It also means tennis. Tennis is one of the popular sports in summer, partly because the conditions are perfect and all the big tournaments are played.
Whether you love tennis or you’ve never played the game before, it’s a fun way to spend your time this summer. Many hotels and resorts have tennis courts. You can play against your friends and loved ones, or hire a coach and learn some skills.
Aging tennis in the summer is not only a fun activity to get into, it is also very healthy. You will notice a change in your core strength and the muscles in your arms and legs will become firm and toned. A nice pay off for having fun.
TAKE A HIKE

With the staycation season in full swing there’s no better way to enjoy it and expose your country or local area than to take a hike. Have a search of your local area online and find a hill or mountain you think you can manage. If you haven’t hiked before don’t be too ambitious.
Hiking gives you access to some spectacular landscapes and fresh air. In some locations the air from the green trees is so fresh that you can almost feel the greenness of it. Hiking in the summer takes you far away from all that small town pollution, it also gives you an excellent workout.
For beginners it’s best to choose a small hill and make a day of it. Those more experienced hikers might want to take a tent and set it up on the hill. Watching the sunset with a small fire burning is a staycation memory you aren’t likely to forget.
READ BOOKS

Have you ever wanted to read all the classics? Think of War and Peace, Ulysses, 100 Years of Solitude, The Lord of the Rings, and all of Dickens. This Summer could be the time for you to make a dent in these and level up your general knowledge of literature.
Find a nice spot in your garden or conservatory and set yourself up so you can read for hours without distractions or interruptions. Make yourself comfortable with iced tea or juice, and some healthy snacks like mixed unsalted nuts. This can be your reading room for the summer.
If you want to get the most out of your reading experience don’t just read the classic books, you also need to read about them. When did the authors live and what was happening in their lives when they wrote those great books. Consider the social and political environment of the time as well.
START AN EXERCISE ROUTINE

We all make resolutions at the turn of the year. We vow to get fitter, eat healthier, and become more productive. As the months wear on, however, those vows start to lose their firmness, life starts to creep in as does excuses.
The summer is another chance to reboot your intentions set at the new year. It’s not too late to meet your aims for the year this summer. If something didn’t work for you before, why not change gears. Try an alternative exercise routine instead to freshen things up.
Think about what you want to achieve with your exercise routine. Do you want to improve your fitness, build core strength, or build muscles? This is your primary objective and it will determine which exercise routine you finally decide to go for. We highly recommend Openfit! Download the app for your Roku or use your phone or laptop to watch workouts from the comfort of your own home. Best of all, it’s less than $15/mo and there are tons of workout programs to choose from.
CONCLUSION
The pandemic looks to be finally coming to an end this summer, however, it will not be over at the flick of a switch. Rather, it will fizzle out gradually in all likelihood. That’s why an overseas holiday is still not recommended this year. Instead opt for a fun and memorable time with one of these staycation ideas.
