Over the course of the last year, the majority of us where either staying at home or buying new ones. The 2020 UK property boom, combined with ongoing lockdowns, has lead to a home renovation revolution that looks set to continue well into 2021.

A survey conducted by Rated People found that 17% of homeowners are planning to upgrade their kitchen this year. An increase on the 12% of people who had new kitchens in 2020. Without the expense of foreign holidays and having to cook so much more for ourselves, it seems plenty of people are wanting to renovate their kitchens in place of having external experiences.

What are homeowners looking for when it comes to kitchens?

With so much of our homes becoming multi-functional these days, it is not surprising that homeowners also want their kitchens to work as multi-functional spaces. In-kitchen dining areas and more counter space to prepare food are desirable.

Modern appliances such as built-in coffee machines, state-of-the-art ovens and hobs to cook on also high on lists of what people searched for. Most homeowners are looking for highly modern and individualized kitchens to suit their tastes.

Following from the huge boom of blue kitchens that were plastered across social media last year, it is no wonder that a blue kitchen is still the number one trend.

Towards the end of 2020, searches on Google for light-blue kitchens were up over 175% year on year. Dark-blue kitchens were not too far behind either. Searches for darker blue kitchen designs were up over 140%

What other home renovation projects are people thinking about?

Unsurprisingly, the move to remote or home working has inspired countless homeowners to create home offices to better suit their needs. Some 7% of the people surveyed by Rated People stated that a home office was their number one home renovation project for 2021.

Many others had a home office a close second on their list, right after kitchens. Some said they were considering garage or loft conversions to create their offices but the biggest trend for 2021 looks set to be the garden office, with many home workers eyeing up office pods away from the house.

What about smaller home projects in 2021?

Nearly half of property owners surveyed (44%) said they would not be undertaking large home renovation projects, instead focussing on redecorating, and painting their homes instead.

It seems that, with everyone spending so much time at home in the last 12 months, most people are hungry to make their properties as beautiful and functional as possible.

Keep these kitchen renovation trends in mind before you decide to tackle any home renovation projects this spring!
