It’s almost that time of year where leaves are falling and your favorite big coats are out of the closet and ready to go back in the rotation. Fall seems to come earlier every year, and if you’ve already seen the amount of Pumpkin Spice flavored items on the shelves in stores (Pumpkin Spice Hard Seltzer is really a shining example of life in 2020), you’ll know it is the time of year to head back indoors and hunker down before the real cold snap comes along.
If you’re the kind of person who gets idle hands around this time of year and doesn’t really know what to do, you’ll be looking for a fall hobby to pass the time. Luckily for you, I’ve compiled a list of some of the best Fall hobbies to keep you busy. Don’t worry, they are mostly quite easy to pick up in no time at all.
Become An Autumnal Runner
Things start having a sense of slowing down at this time of year, but that doesn’t mean you should!

Running is a great Fall hobby! If you tried running earlier in the summer and found yourself unable to hack the heat, these milder days are ideal for taking it at your own pace. All you need is a decent pair of running shoes (honestly, buy a decent pair rather than wearing regular trainers) and a windbreaker, and you’re good to go.
As long as you don’t mind stomping a foot in a puddle every once in a while, it’s the ideal way to let your thoughts tune out for a few minutes and help get the body moving. For anyone out there still working from home, you’ll want to place as much importance on running this season as making sure you look presentable on those work Zoom calls.
See If You’re A Natural Model Maker
Picture the scene. It’s a rainy night outside. You have a cup of hot chocolate by your side at the table. Your favorite chill-out music is playing and you’re getting to grips with using a tiny screwdriver.

It’s the wildlife of being a model maker. I find activities like this, where you can take your time while using your hands, to be very therapeutic and almost meditative. It helps too that you can find a model for almost anything, ranging from simple popsicle ships to spaceships and racing cars (take a look at these racing car models from Model Space, who have complete model kits to order online).
If you don’t want to fully immerse yourself in the world of model making, and would like to try something out where the whole family can get involved, I recommend reading this article on the benefits of doing DIY craft projects with the kids and consider this fall hobby.
Jam It Up!

I hate to say it for all of those people out there who spent the months during lockdown developing starters on the kitchen shelf, but the sourdough season is over. Autumn is when a lot of amazing fruits are in season. Fruits like apples, figs, pears, and plums all start showing up much more on store shelves, making them ideal for making jam with.
Jam is surprisingly easy to make and a great fall hobby. You can watch any old YouTube video to see how it works, but it mostly involves cooking down chopped up fruit with sugar, before popping it in sterilised (that means cleaned with hot water) jars.
One upside of making jam, and buying jars in the next few weeks, is that if you make some very delicious jam, you can then use them as gifts for Christmas. With many people tightening their belts this year, it’s a practical and oh so delicious idea.
Oh, and go online to see if there’s an apple farm nearby which runs apple picking in the fall. Not only is it going to see your haul more apples than you can carry, but it’s also a fantastic family activity which easily follows social distancing.
Make Time For Family Fun

One last suggestion before I go. Fall can be a time of year where it’s completely natural to start feeling a little down or glum due to the weather and how miserable outside can look. So make sure you set times during the week where you, and your family, get together and have some fun. It could be something as simple as watching funny YouTube videos on the couch or dusting off the old puzzles even if the box is missing a few pieces. One of our favorite games to play for family game night is Rummikub!
