Owning a home is a huge responsibility, and the initial purchase is only the beginning. Taking proper care of your home is a crucial part of extending the longevity and boosting the equity of your property.
If you’re not so sure where to begin, but you want to be the best homeowner you can be, take some time for research. Read through this brief compilation of some regular home maintenance tasks all homeowners should know, and make your own schedule for completing what needs to get done around the house this year.
Test the sump pump in your home
It’s common for new homeowners to overlook their sump pump. A lot of people don’t even know what it is.
However, neglecting your home’s sump pump can result in a flooded basement floor. Dig into what it takes to properly test the function of your sump pump, and avoid unnecessary damage to your home.
Take good care of your HVAC system
Replacing a broken HVAC unit isn’t a cheap fix. It’s best to take the necessary steps to properly maintain the system in hopes of prolonging the usable lifespan.
If you take special care to regularly change your air filters inside the home, you will give your HVAC unit a better shot at longevity.
It’s also important to have your heating and air conditioning unit professionally serviced at least once per year to assure everything is in good working order. If there is a visible issue upon inspection, you could save hundreds by heading off the problem.
Clean out the weep holes in your windows
If your home’s windows are equipped with weep holes, they could become clogged by bugs and other random debris throughout the year. It’s wise to take a look at your windows, and take the steps to clean out the weep holes at least once per year.
Clean weep holes mean that rainwater can freely move away from the base of your window frame, leaving the inside of your home high and dry.
Clean the debris from your gutters
Take the time once or twice per year to clear excess debris from your gutters. Clogged gutters can cause water to pool in places around your home and cause damage. Freeing a path for excess rainwater to run off and away from your home will keep everything running smooth.
Clean out the lint exhaust
Hopefully, you clean out the internal vent on your dryer after every use. However, the maintenance doesn’t end there. The dryer vent lint exhaust that leads outside of your home has to be cleaned intermittently as well.
Lint can build up in the exhaust vent and create a significant fire hazard in your home. Once a year, step outside and dig deep into that vent to pull out the accumulated lint from not using lint sheets.
