While the number of marriages in the Philippines has been going down recently, there are still well over 400,000 taking place each and every year. That is a lot of people tying the knot. And with many people electing for large weddings these days, there is a good chance you have been to a few different types of weddings in your life.
Types of Wedding Ceremonies
If you have been to weddings in the US, you will likely know all that occurs at each ceremony. This includes the rituals that take place, where it is held, the types of flowers, and more. However, when you travel to other places around the world, you might be surprised to find out just how different some wedding ceremonies are compared to what you’re used to. While there are some similarities, such as the existence of wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses (including awesome deals like these), there are also a ton of differences.
With that in mind, this blog post is going to look at a few different and awesome wedding traditions and wedding ceremonies from around the world.
Mexican Weddings
While weddings take place on numerous days and time, it is a tradition for many to hold their wedding during a summer evening. The region the wedding takes place in will often dictate what the bride will wear. It could be a standard white dress in some areas, while other areas may call for a colorful dress made of a different fabric, it all depends on the Mexican wedding traditions of that area.
During the wedding ceremonies, there are generally a few traditions unique to Mexico. First, a bride is given 13 coins by the groom, which are used to represent God and his disciples. Next, once the vows have officially been read off, the priest will (using a rosary or ribbons) tie the couples together. This is called a “lazo” and this is used to symbolize the couples unbreakable bond together. Another unique tradition about Mexican weddings are the existence of “Madrinas”. These people have the role of helping the bride an and handle the events of her wedding day.
Italian Weddings
Italian wedding ceremonies usually begin in the morning. While a bride will usually wear a white dress like many other cultures, she will also wear a veil. In the USA, Canada and other nations, wearing something blue is often referred to as lucky on the wedding day. However, in Italy, it is something green. The color is said to bring good luck to both the bride and groom.
Instead of driving, many Italian brides and grooms will actually head to the wedding chapel on foot. Also, it is bad luck for the groom to turn around once he’s outside, so friends will often be by the groom’s side all day to help him not need to turn around before the wedding ceremonies begin. Once the wedding has concluded, it is tradition for Italian newlyweds to smash a vase, and the amount of pieces the vase smashes into is how many years they will remain together.
Indian Weddings
Because India is a very large and diverse country, the wedding ceremonies and traditions can vary from area to area. There are so many different traditions, rituals and ceremonies within Indian weddings that we could craft a whole article just on them alone.
There are many different wedding ceremonies that will often take place over the duration of weddings or even before the wedding even begins. For example, one is called the Mehendi ceremony. This is where the bride has her hands, feet and other parts of her body decorated with lovely henna designs.
As you might imagine, the many Christians who live within India’s over 1 billion population have weddings that closely resemble the weddings in Western cultures.
However, one thing that remains constant is the length of Indian weddings. While most weddings in many cultures will only last a few hours, Indian weddings last multiple days. Another huge difference is how the couple dresses, wedding fashion is much more extravagant and most brides (at least the ones who are Muslim or Hindu) will wear red and not white.
