It goes without saying that interior design and decor can be overwhelming! There are simply so many different kinds of aesthetics and styles, and each category has several variations and subcategories that just serve to complicate the issue even more. If you’re looking for a guide on the top 5 design styles that we predict will dominate in 2018, you came to the right place. Some of these styles draw inspiration from the decor style guide, and others are still emerging. Let us know which you think you’ll incorporate into your home in the coming year!

Mid-century Modern

Not to be confused with contemporary design, mid-century modern was inspired by the industry boom after the end of World War II. This style makes use of glossy molded plastic and aluminum to replace the heavy industrial vibes of the earlier 20th century. Furniture became more modular, with tapered legs and smooth lines replacing the chunkier, solely-utilitarian furniture. This was the beginning of the movement that favored more lightweight furniture and the opening up of spaces to allow more fresh air and light into the home. Large windows are popular, and the color palette is usually neutral, occasionally with tasteful “pops” of color. This design hasn’t gone out of style since it first hit the scene, and it shows no sign of becoming any less popular in 2018, as minimalism continues to be the hot trend of the modern homeowner.

Vintage-inspired

This decor style harkens back to those items that your grandparents unironically kept in their house – everything from natural wood to vinyl. Remember the mint green tones mixed with springy pinks? The classic “tacky floral” print has been a staple of the vintage design, incorporated with a bit more taste to avoid clashing colors and patterns. Candle holders are a great accent piece, as are the creative use of old containers including glass jars, bottles, and burlap bags, to prevent anything from going to waste. In sharp contrast with the heavy industrial style and funky contemporary styles, 2018 is likely going to be a year of more homey, authentic designs.

Country Chic or Rustic

Rustic interiors feature the same mixed-material aesthetic that you’re likely to find in industrial design, including natural wood combined with metal accents, making no attempt to hide the purely utilitarian parts of the home that many designs attempt to conceal. However, the rustic aesthetic is much less mechanical and more authentic than popular industrial and neo-futuristic designs. For instance, rustic design embraces hand-crafted wood and of course leather objects, making good use of old jam jars, vases of flowers, and anything that brings outdoor or earthy tones into the home. You don’t need to force country accents such as cowboy boots and flannels if you don’t want to, but many decorators feel they fit perfectly with the rustic style.

Bohemian and Shabby Chic

Boho is all about that adventurous, nomadic lifestyle, enjoying bright colors, abstract patterns, and combinations of different textiles. Shabby chic, whose color palette is much more off-white and neutrals, is where bohemian design meets vintage. This design features aged materials that could have been picked up at your local thrift store or even garage sales. Think distressed wood, sanded or peeling paints, soft linens, tassled cushions, and more. The combination of purely bohemian and shabby chic design is perfect for the more carefree, curious, and expressive homeowner.

Hot Trend: Black and White

It’s not quite a full design style, but the classic black-and-white style pattern is more than likely to make a comeback in 2018. It’s already been spotted in patterns, prints, and accessories across Europe. This impactful, unapologetic pattern could work with a variety of different design themes, including but certainly not limited to the ones listed above. Aside from art, bedding, and other decorative aspects of the home, more structural elements of the home such as contrasting flooring, statement ceilings, and black-and-white marble are likely to see a resurgence of this timeless color palette.
