The Do’s And Don’ts of Fashion For 2019

Style is about more than rules — it’s about expressing yourself and feeling great. But if you don’t know the basics, you won’t know how to break the rules confidently and in the right places. So let’s start here, with five basic “do’s” and “don’ts” of fashion.

Do buy lasting classics in flattering fits

How do you build the perfect wardrobe? It might be easier than you think. The key to looking great in your clothes is finding fits that flatter your body type.

This is good news, because it means the quick-moving styles and trends which render your old clothes unfashionable are not as important as you might assume. Here’s a tip: focus on the fit, and buy quality classics that are short on the sort of flashy details that characterize flash-in-pan fashion. Then supplement those staples with more affordable versions of trendy items.

Don’t over-accessorize

Accessories are a lot of fun, but they’re very easy to overdo. Combining accessories can make for great and unique looks, but don’t bury yourself in jewelry or become the person who is never seen without a hat! Use accessories in moderation and combine them wisely, taking into account not just how they look with one another but how they look with your clothes, too.

And have you ever heard the advice that says to take one piece off before you leave the house? It’s not a bad way to keep your more over-the-top choices personal while striking the right balance in public.

Do change your wardrobe’s colors with the season

Have you ever heard that you are a “summer” or a “winter?” That would be the “four-season color analysis”, a popular way to describe a person’s complexion and quickly determine what colors look best on them.

There’s a reason why the analysis is named after the seasons: just like you, seasons have colors that suit them best. So while you should always remember which colors are best for you, you should also keep in mind that different seasons mean different looks. Grab sunny yellow dresses for summer and wear them into fall along with pieces in orange and burgundy. Then keep that burgundy in a winter wardrobe full of dark, warm colors and then transition into greens and brighter pieces in spring.

Don’t overpay for flash-in-the-pan trends

There’s a time and a place to spend big on fashion. But trendy designer stuff is not, for the most part, the right choice. Unless you’re a millionaire who wants to show the world that you can afford to do so, there’s no reason to spend big bucks on fleeting high-fashion styles that will be gauche by next year! Balance your spending: opt for quality in classics, and go a little easier on your pocketbook when you buy more trendy items. There’s no sense in buying a classic for cheap if it will just wear out, and there’s no sense in buying a trendy item for big bucks if it will be out of fashion within the year.

Do celebrate yourself

Anyone with a good fashion sense knows that it’s important to understand style basics, trends, and “dress codes”. But you should never let all of the “do’s” and “don’ts” of fashion control your entire wardrobe. Once you know the rules, let yourself break them when you feel it’s time! And if you have a bold statement piece that doesn’t seem “in,” wear it anyway.

Fashion is about fun. Pulling off great fashion is about confidence. Dressing well can make you more confident, but it’s just as important to remember that confident people can make bold style moves look effortless. So don’t back down! When you put together a wardrobe that is right for you, will will combine the classics and rules with your own personality. Celebrate yourself and what makes you unique through the clothes that you wear!
